Was clearing up my pile of junk in the study room the other day and found a whole collection of wedding invitation cards. I think my dad must have dumped them all into a corner when he was looking for his books (spring cleaning time, as you can see). Along with old cards which have turned slightly yellowish, I also found new ones which my mom's best friend has given to her for reference purposes. Recently, any wedding thing that she receives and finds fancy, she'd keep and give to my mom, real sweet.
Anyway, it's amazing how creative people can get when it comes to invitation cards. Some of them aren't even cards at all! For example, one of the cool ones that my dad got was a bamboo stick about 30cm long. On the bamboo stick, inked in cursive writing, was the name of the bride and groom. Inside the hollow of the bamboo, was a rolled up parchment of paper, of the actual invitation. Cool isn't it? Oh, this bamboo stick was put inside a neat draw-string bag the size of that bamboo. Needless to say, all invitations were sent by hand.
Another interesting one was a cd, which had picture of bride and groom on the cover, and another one was a long envelope, which had a pair of chopsticks attached to the invitation card. Real cute! These were Chinese weddings but the bamboo one was a wedding of someone from Ibanese decendant or something like that.
Now, the Malay invitations that I have found piled were your real sidefold or topfold invitation cards but maann were they faannceeee. Some had the whole card filled with florally swirly designs and writings soooo cursive you could barely make out what it says. Some had a more classy touch and kept to pure elegance. The elegant ones, I liked very much.
Another interesting one was a small white box, with the words "undangan perkahwinan" on the cover in silver cursive writing. Inside the box was chocolates, a small bottle of perfume, and a tiny pouch containing bunga rampai. For Indi : Bunga rampai consists of very finely shredded pandan leaves, mixed with rose petals and also bread flower. It gives of a wonderful fragrance. My mom likes it so much she makes some every now and then and puts them in bowls around the house as 'air fresheners'.
So I think I pretty much have an idea of what sort of card I'd like to have for myself. Simple, not too much writing that would give people a headache, yet have a flair of elegance to go with it. Hopefully some shop out there would have a design that catches my eye.
I'll post up some pictures of cards that I found while surfing the web later on. Somehow uploading pics don't work on the office pc…ehhehehe…they've probably blocked it or something. Meanwhile, anyone have suggestions?
